    Description

Civil War Era Reproduction Men's Underdrawers (drawers, underpants) in 100% cotton flannel. This style was worn from about 1840-the 1870's and even later for older men.
Available in sizes small 34" waist 37" hips, medium 40" waist 43" hips, large 46" waist, 49" hips and x-large 50" waist 55" hips.
They are made of soft, warm 100% cotton flannel in white and off-white, brown and red. They have a button fly with 3 to 4 genuine antique bone underwear buttons. The waist has a 3-4" opening at the back. There is a cord tie run through tiny button holes at the back waist which allows for some adjustment of the waistband. All of the seams are flat felled (turned and completely encased) for longer wear. There is a 2-3" opening at the seam on the outside of the ankle, through which is placed a cotton drawstring which is tied at the ankle to keep the drawers from riding up, especially in boots.
Drawers were worn for cleanliness and comfort. They are much easier to wash (and to wear) than the scratchy wool trousers.
From the pattern Timeless Stitches Men's Drawers TSM-722:  "Drawers were used by all classes and under all styles of clothing. The difference was in the quality of the cloth used. A stout muslin or coarse flannel (wool flannel not cotton flannelette) was used by the working class and under work clothes. A finer muslin, linen or flannel was used under business of everyday clothing and silk, fine muslin, good quality linen or soft flannel was used under evening or dress wear. Today we can make drawers out of muslin, cotton flannelette (for warmth) or if you can find it and your husband is not affected by the wool, wool flannel. Silks, and linens can also be used. I have found enough references to calicos that I believe even some calicos would not be inappropriate."
Since these are underwear they cannot be returned so please, measure before you order!
